The results of the project were reported in national mass media, and Neguinhoâs case figured in heated debates about the affirmative action policies aimed at Brazilâs black population, such as quotas for access to public universities and differential health policies. 2 Pena considers this typical of the high levels of genetic mixture among Brazilians that his studies have systematically revealed since the publication of his âMolecular Portrait of Brazilâ (Pena et al., 2000). Neguinhoâs test revealed 67.1 percent European ancestry. 1 The analyses were performed by geneticist Sérgio Pena of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, who has conducted extensive research on the ancestry of the Brazilian population. Neguinhoâs DNA was tested as part of the Afro-Brazilian Roots project, commissioned by BBC Brazil, which investigated the genetic profiles of nine black celebrities â with a particular focus on their African ancestry â in order to raise the interest of the Brazilian population in its African origins. With his dark skin â Neguinho can be roughly translated as âblackieâ â and his leading role in Rio de Janeiroâs famous Beija-Flor samba school, he is a highly visible symbol of the countryâs black community and culture. In May 2007, media coverage exploded in Brazil around the genetic ancestry of Neguinho da Beija-Flor.
